With the commitment to improve the livelihood of the Rural masses SIRD has initiated many Research activities. Apart from the usual fact finding and conceptualizing process it is also actively engaged in Action Research Projects. The Haryali Project under IWDP for Mabong-Sigeng Suldung Kamling West Sikkim is being worked out by SIRD with the Faculties being given Special responsibility each area. The Project cost is Rs 9.82 million sanctioned during CFY and the project is spread over 5 years. Besides Natural resource development and management through intensive afforastation SIRD is facilitating in improving their livelihood through poultry, piggery floriculture and bee keeping. This hamlets has been taken as the Social Laboratories of SIRD.

The institute has also maintained a small apiary of apes melifera beehives brought from Bihar in its campus and is now looking forward to inaugurate a Bee research and training center. It also sponsors batches of unemployed youths to undergo training in bee keeping in Uttar Pradesh. The institute is developing Amusement park cum Herbal Garden Unit at Tokal Bermiok.

SIRD works in close liaison with the National institute of Rural Development, NERC and other national Level Institute of repute. The institution has also tied up with IGNOU and is opening a study center for various degree and diploma course.SIRD has also collaborated with the Swiss agency for development and works with the Indo-Swiss project of Sikkim with the aim of empowering the people of rural Sikkim.

Vision 2010:The Director and the SIRD family has envisioned that by 2010 it would emerge as a premiere institute in the country and a national level resource centre on democratic decentralization, floriculture, medicinal plants, natural resource management, rural employment and sustainable development.NIRD, Hyderabad has sponsored 3 best performing SIRDs in the country for an international programme in Indonesia in 2005.SIRD Sikkim was one of the participants.
