 "Jorethang" A Glimpse

Jorethang unravels one of the hidden beauties of south Sikkim.It is a small urban settlement upon the bank of the river Rangeet.It lies sprawled upon the foothills with the hills of Darjeeling looming large in the south on the opposite of the river. It is easily accessible on road from Silliguri (83 km), Gangtok (85 km) and Namchi(19 km).It is the main hub of the South and West Sikkim.

Altitude: 1310 ft.

Temp.: ranges from 4 to 38 degree celcius.During the month of March to October temperature soars almost to 38-40 degrees However its pretty much cold here during the month of November to February.

The ongoing construction of Regional Administrative Complex at karfectar, the proposed Sports Complex and the Polytechnic College and EIILM University are due to make the Jorethang most happening regions of the State in the near future

Jorethang Road facts

Nearest Airport : Bagdogra (Distance: 112 km)
Jorethang is only 3 hrs. journey from Airport. Private luxury vehicles are readily available on hire . Prepaid taxi counter is also available at Bagdogra.

Nearest Railhead: (NJP) New Jalpaiguri ( 103 km)

Jorethang is only 3 hrs. journey from NJP. All Guwahati or North Eastern States bound trains are having stoppage at NJP. Private vehicles are available from railway station for Jorethang. Taxis are available for Jorethang from Siliguri almost everyday.

2006 Maghey Mela at Jorethang

It is 6 day Mega event and the largest of its kind in Sikkim and North Bengal whose popularity can be gauged by the fact that people as far away from eastern Nepal Bhutan and Bangladesh attending this festival in droves. The Maghey Mela committee headed by honorable minister Shri K. N. Rai. have decided to showcase the culture and the tradition of this region adding a distinct , authentic flavour to the festival. In addition to the regular items of fun and entertainment there will be a rural sports meet, adventure sports, traditional cultural shows, traditional cuisines that all can savour, plays, competitions etc …..their aim being to make this event memorable so that people look forward to this festival every year. 
The Jorethang Maghey Mela is witnessing a consistent growth with a turnout of visitors on the rise since its inception, about five lakh people visited the Mela in Jan' 2005.Owing to economic planning of the State Government, its large employee pool and a rapid rise in the construction business in Sikkim, the purchasing power of thepeople has accrued over the years. Activities of non farm sectors like service and tourism also shown great promise and will certainly add to the economic well being and prosperity of this region in the near future. This festival is ripe with business and trade opportunities and can serve as a platform to give your business that much needed visibility. 

The fest is held every year sometimes in mid january.The duration for the rural fair could be as long as a week though it is subject to plans of the local mela committee.
